With the recent passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill” on July 4, 2025, the solar industry is entering a new era. The 30% residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) will officially sunset on December 31, 2025, creating a compressed timeline and significant market disruption.
The sudden change at the end of the year applies exclusively to the Residential Clean Energy Credit under Section 25D of the U.S. Tax Code. However, this adjustment does not immediately affect commercial solar installations or third-party-owned residential systems—such as leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs)—which are covered under the separate Clean Electricity Investment Credit in Section 48E.
Your next chapter starts today
For residential solar installers, this shift presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The short-term residential boom in 2025 may be followed by a potential sharp drop-off initially. Now is the time to diversify and build your pipeline and a long-term strategy—starting with commercial and industrial (C&I) solar development.
Why commercial solar now?
C&I projects often take 6 to 12+ months to develop, depending on an installer’s experience, access to financing, regional regulations, construction timelines, and site complexity. That means residential-focused installers should act now to build a C&I pipeline that will sustain their businesses beyond 2025. At Enphase, we provide the products, training, and services that make the transition straightforward and profitable.
