Why solar?

Furman University decided to go solar years ago, driven by a commitment to sustainability and long-term energy cost savings. While those goals were well-founded, the existing 988 kW commercial solar array was no longer operating at its full potential. Aging or failing equipment prevented the site from producing the energy it was designed to deliver.

That’s where Detail Solar, a trusted local installer, stepped in. After evaluating site conditions and system components, the company identified the project as an ideal candidate for repowering. The strategy included upgrading and replacing key elements of the underperforming photovoltaic system with modern, high-efficiency technology. This strategy would help the campus restore and optimize energy production—extending the life of the asset while maximizing its return on investment.

Paul Zimmer, founder and owner of Detail Solar, was dedicated to ensuring this customer's solar investment delivered stronger returns. He noted, "As a family‑run business, we take pride in delivering the performance our customers expect—whether it’s a new solar installation or an existing system that needs a fresh approach. We’re excited to help more local businesses understand how the Enphase Commercial Solution enables both high‑performing new systems and effective repowering strategies that restore and improve solar production."

Following this recommendation, Furman University chose a phased retrofit strategy. During phase one, 30 kW of the total solar array will be retrofitted with Enphase commercial microinverters. Performance will be closely monitored to measure success and inform future phases, with the long-term plan to upgrade and optimize the entire 988 kW system.

Why Enphase?

Detail Solar approached the project with a clear objective: eliminate the limitations and underperformance caused by the existing string inverter architecture. The Enphase IQ9 Commercial Solution proved to be the ideal fit. Because the site’s existing infrastructure supported seamless integration, the transition to IQ9 Microinverters required minimal disruption while delivering rapid immediate performance benefits.

Unlike traditional string inverters, Enphase microinverters significantly reduce system downtime by isolating issues to individual modules rather than impacting large portions of the solar array. This distributed architecture not only improves reliability but also simplifies operations and maintenance. Detail Solar agrees that from an installer’s perspective, Enphase systems are intuitive to deploy, highly reliable, and supported by a customer service team that sets the industry standard.

The installer brought extensive experience with Enphase residential products and a longstanding, positive relationship with the Enphase support organization. After experiencing years of challenges with commercial central inverter options, discovering that the IQ9 Commercial Microinverters support 480 V infrastructure made the decision straightforward. Transitioning from the existing, failing central inverters to Enphase commercial microinverters offered a clear path to improved performance, reliability, and long-term value.

Most importantly, Enphase’s industry-leading 25-year warranty played a decisive role—providing Furman University with confidence that their repowered system is built not just for today, but for decades to come.
